The truck is packed and we are headed up to Lynn to start Volume Two of the ExCL adventure. The first 30 years in Boston were amazing and we have high hopes and dreams about where we are headed. There will be some changes to structures and hours to ensure everyone has access to the materials they have come to rely on. We will be sending out a detailed email and announcement a little later this week, but as you can imagine, we are going to be super busy for the next three days.

This could not have happened without the dedication to education shown by SPIN of Lynn and the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley.

Thank you globe, and Geoff Edgers for highlighting our center with this story. We would like to point out that the fire violations are due to the actual physical space in the Boston Latin Academy. There are several upgrades that BPS is not going to do. 1. Add a sprinkler head 2. put in a smoke dampening system in the duct work 3. Brick up windows that look out onto a hallway. Are a few others. These were determined after a fire safety assessment last spring. If the space had been upgraded, so that it was to code, then there would not have been issues. To our knowledge even with ExCL gone there are no plans to "invest in the space" -- the words of BPS, not us.

I am sending this letter on behalf on the ExCL (Extras for Creative Learning Recycling Center), which is now closed after 30 years due to facilities issues.

As teachers in the Boston Public Schools, we have relied on ExCL for numerous essential items for our schools and classrooms that directly benefited Boston students. Just a few of these examples have been: binders, folders, writing utensils, bins, paper, art and craft supplies, paint, lab equipment, books and tools. Most of these high demand items on the list are not provided by the schools, forcing teachers to spend even more of their own money on classroom supplies, or, running classrooms without basic organizational and creative elements that make teaching better and more efficient. ExCL has provided much of desperately needed classroom supplies to teachers for free, or extremely low prices, the goal being re-using things for a good purpose.

ExCL has not only provided materials and supplies to the schools, teachers, and students of Boston and the greater Boston Area, it has also consistently been one of the few establishments that has shown by example what it means to take care of our community and our world. Our students have seen how items that would have been thrown out and placed in landfills can be transformed in to beautiful creations in our classrooms. The use of ExCL materials has also exposed our students to experiences they might have not otherwise been able to have in the classroom: felt and fabric has allowed for quilts to be sewn, large cardboard tubes have allowed for monumental sculptures, and small plastic tops and covers have been made into sculptures, models, maps and much more. ExCL has opened the door for exciting and wonderful educational opportunities, which our schools, teachers and students will now lose.

We strongly urge you to consider finding a new home ExCL one of the top priorities for the next few weeks. The teachers, students and artists of Boston desperately need the supplies and consistent support we get from ExCL. The City of Boston needs ExCl as well: for example most of the supplies which the students in art classes were to use to make the centerpieces for the 55^th Annual Fall Conference of the Council of the Great City Schools were going to come from ExCL . Our planet needs ExCL: at this time of environmental uncertainty having a powerful example of how to take care of our world in smart, meaningful and creative ways is extraordinarily important. We truly hope you will find time and resources to save this amazing place.

Just after lunch on Thursday August 25, yesterday, we received a call notifying us of a letter from the Boston Fire Department to the Boston Public Schools, saying that we were to cease all operations immediately and have all of the materials gone in 30 days.

We fainted. This was totally unexpected, & we thought this issue was solved.

We are being allowed to open next week for shopping

August 29 - September 2.

Current Memberships:

After Friday the 2nd, at 5pm all memberships will go into suspended animation; this means if we are closed for two months, two months will be added to your membership.

We are working to find storage. We are not liquidating.

Membership Fee Increase

As you know we do everything we can to keep membership as low as possible. It has been 2.5 years since we have had to increase fees. On August 15, 2011 membership fees will be increased as follows:

All prices are for the number of listed visits or one year, whichever comes first:

Individual Boston Public School Teachers and Staff:
$50 for up to 8 visits
$90 for up to 15 visits

All other individuals:
$50 for up to 6 visits
$90 for up to 12 visits

All Organizations, (2 or more people sharing a membership):
$250 for up to 36 visits

If you like to plan ahead, you can renew your current membership before August 15 at the OLD price. Even if your membership does not expire until next July. We will make a note in your file that you have renewed already. This is available for all levels of memberships. Please call us with any questions, really, we like getting phone calls, 617-635-8284.

The board of ExCL thought and talked about this quite a bit, and did not raise fees lightly. If you have comments or concerns please email them at exclboard@gmail.com.

There are three large boxes available, different sizes, lockable, free for members

Tons of ribbons! These are lanyards that were misprints or cut wrong. There is a huge variety and many of them are very long. Free for members.

Plastic containers, there are no lids but there are a ton of them. Free for members.

Oddly, this does not mean that we are not working. We are out collecting a bunch of fabulous goodies and getting ready for all of the summer workshops we do in the community.

We have gotten about 6 pallets of 2011 calendars. They are a variety of blotter style, hanging, and personal planners. Some of the planners are especially nice, both hardbound, and faux leather covers. Some of them have pictures some not.
Even if you can't use the first 6 months, the paper on the large ones is great size for making posters and drawing.
